The Story Behind

Chhath Puja is an ancient Hindu Vedic festival dedicated to Surya (Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (Goddess Usha). It is believed to be one of the oldest forms of sun worship, dating back to the Vedic period. The festival is celebrated mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh. According to mythology, Chhath was first performed by Draupadi during the Pandavas' exile, and later by Karna, the son of Surya. The festival involves rigorous rituals over four days, including fasting, holy bathing, and offering prayers to the setting and rising sun. It is unique because it worships the setting sun, symbolizing gratitude for the life-giving energy, and the rising sun, symbolizing hope and new beginnings.

Traditional Rituals

1

Nahay Khay (Day 1)

Devotees take a holy bath in a river or pond and prepare a vegetarian meal. The house is cleaned thoroughly, and the devotee eats only one meal prepared with strict purity.

2

Kharna (Day 2)

Devotees observe a day-long fast without water, breaking it in the evening after sunset puja. Kheer (rice pudding) and roti are prepared and offered to the deity before consumption.

3

Sandhya Arghya (Day 3)

The main day when devotees go to riverbanks or water bodies to offer arghya (water offering) to the setting sun. They stand in water and offer fruits, thekua, and other items in bamboo baskets.

4

Usha Arghya (Day 4)

Before sunrise, devotees return to the water body to offer arghya to the rising sun. After this final offering, the fast is broken, and prasad is distributed to family and community.
