The Story Behind

Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the most celebrated festivals in Hinduism, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The festival has multiple mythological origins. The most popular legend celebrates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya lit oil lamps to welcome their beloved king, illuminating the entire kingdom. Another legend associates Diwali with Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, who emerged from the ocean during Samudra Manthan on this day. It is also believed that Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura on this day, freeing 16,000 captive princesses. In Jainism, Diwali marks the nirvana of Lord Mahavira, and in Sikhism, it celebrates the release of Guru Hargobind Ji from imprisonment. Diwali is celebrated over five days, with the main day dedicated to Lakshmi Puja. Homes are cleaned, decorated with rangoli and lights, and families gather to worship, exchange gifts, and enjoy festive meals.

Traditional Rituals

1

Lakshmi Puja

The main ritual of Diwali is the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. Devotees clean their homes, create a sacred space, and perform puja with flowers, sweets, and offerings. The puja is performed in the evening when Lakshmi is believed to visit homes.

2

Lighting Diyas and Lamps

Clay oil lamps (diyas) are lit and placed around the home, in windows, doorways, and courtyards. The lights symbolize the removal of spiritual darkness and the welcoming of prosperity and positive energy.

3

Rangoli Decoration

Colorful rangoli patterns are created at the entrance of homes using colored powders, flowers, and rice. These beautiful designs welcome Goddess Lakshmi and add to the festive atmosphere.

4

Fireworks and Celebrations

Fireworks and crackers are burst to celebrate the joyous occasion. Families exchange gifts, sweets, and good wishes. New clothes are worn, and special festive meals are prepared and shared.
