Karwa Chauth is a significant festival celebrated by married Hindu women, primarily in North India. The word "Karwa" refers to an earthen pot and "Chauth" means the fourth day. The festival falls on the fourth day after the full moon in the month of Kartik. According to legend, Queen Veervati observed a strict fast for her husband but broke it before moonrise due to her brothers' trickery, causing her husband to fall ill. Through her devotion and prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, she was able to revive him. Another legend tells of Savitri who brought her husband Satyavan back from death through her devotion. Women observe this fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for their husband's long life, prosperity, and well-being.
Before sunrise, the mother-in-law gives sargi (pre-dawn meal) to the daughter-in-law. This includes fruits, sweets, and savory items that provide energy throughout the day of fasting.
Married women observe a strict nirjala (without water) fast from sunrise to moonrise. They spend the day in prayers, applying mehndi, and preparing for the evening puja.
Women gather in groups to perform the Karwa Chauth puja, listening to the vrat katha (story), and passing the karwa (earthen pot) among themselves while singing traditional songs.
After moonrise, women view the moon through a sieve, then look at their husband's face through the same sieve. The husband then offers water and the first morsel of food to break the fast.
