The Story Behind

Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, who incarnated to destroy evil and establish dharma. Born at midnight in a prison cell in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, Krishna's birth was miraculous. His maternal uncle, the tyrant King Kansa, had imprisoned his parents after a prophecy declared that Devaki's eighth son would kill him. On the night of Krishna's birth, divine intervention helped Vasudeva carry the newborn across the Yamuna River to Gokul, where he was raised by Yashoda and Nanda. Krishna's childhood was filled with divine play (leelas) - from stealing butter to lifting Govardhan mountain, from dancing with the gopis to playing the enchanting flute. His teachings in the Bhagavad Gita provide timeless wisdom on duty, devotion, and the path to liberation. Janmashtami is celebrated with great devotion, fasting, midnight prayers, and joyous festivities.

Traditional Rituals

1

Fasting

Devotees observe a strict fast throughout the day, consuming only fruits and milk. The fast is broken only after midnight, at the auspicious moment of Krishna's birth, following the puja and aarti.

2

Midnight Celebration

Temples and homes are decorated beautifully. At midnight, the moment of Krishna's birth, special puja is performed. The idol of baby Krishna is placed in a decorated cradle, and devotees sing lullabies and bhajans.

3

Dahi Handi

In Maharashtra and other regions, the Dahi Handi ceremony is performed where a pot filled with curd, butter, and milk is hung high, and groups of young men form human pyramids to break it, recreating Krishna's childhood butter-stealing adventures.

4

Bhajan and Kirtan

Devotional songs, bhajans, and kirtans praising Krishna are sung throughout the day and night. The atmosphere is filled with devotion, joy, and celebration of Krishna's divine leelas.
