The Story Behind

Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of the Tulsi (holy basil) plant to Lord Vishnu or his avatar Krishna. According to Hindu mythology, Tulsi was originally a woman named Vrinda who was devoted to Lord Vishnu. After a series of events involving her husband, the demon king Jalandhar, she was transformed into the Tulsi plant. Lord Vishnu promised to marry her annually, and this ceremony is observed as Tulsi Vivah. The festival marks the end of the four-month period of Chaturmas when marriages are prohibited. After Tulsi Vivah, the Hindu wedding season officially begins. The ceremony is performed with all the rituals of a traditional Hindu wedding, with the Tulsi plant as the bride and a Shaligram stone or Vishnu idol as the groom.

Traditional Rituals

1

Decoration of Tulsi

The Tulsi plant is decorated like a bride with a red cloth, jewelry, and flowers. A mandap (canopy) is created around the plant using sugarcane sticks and mango leaves.

2

Vivah Ceremony

The marriage ceremony is performed with Vedic mantras, just like a traditional Hindu wedding. The Shaligram or Vishnu idol is placed next to Tulsi, and the priest conducts the rituals.

3

Phere and Sindoor

Seven rounds (phere) are symbolically performed around the sacred fire. Sindoor is applied to the Tulsi plant, and the marriage is solemnized with the tying of the sacred thread.

4

Aarti and Prasad

After the ceremony, aarti is performed, and prasad including sweets, fruits, and sugarcane is distributed to all present. The celebration continues with bhajans and community feasting.
