The Story Behind
Pitru Paksha is a 16-day period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to honoring deceased ancestors. According to Hindu belief, during this period, the souls of ancestors descend to the earthly realm to receive offerings from their descendants. The legend of Karna from the Mahabharata explains the origin - when Karna died and reached heaven, he found only gold and jewels as food because he had donated only wealth during his lifetime, never food. He was sent back to earth for 15 days to make food offerings, which became Pitru Paksha. Performing Shradh rituals during this period is believed to help ancestors attain moksha and bring blessings of prosperity, health, and happiness to the family.
Traditional Rituals
Tarpan
Offering water mixed with black sesame seeds, barley, and kusha grass to ancestors while reciting their names and gotras. This is performed facing south, the direction of Yama, the god of death.
Pinda Daan
Offering rice balls (pindas) representing the bodies of ancestors. These are placed on kusha grass and offered with prayers for the peace and liberation of departed souls.
Shradh Puja
A formal ceremony performed by a priest, invoking ancestors and offering food, water, and prayers. The ritual includes specific mantras and offerings based on family traditions.
Brahmin Bhojan
Feeding Brahmins is considered highly meritorious during Pitru Paksha. The food offered to Brahmins is believed to reach the ancestors directly.
