Vasant Panchami, also known as Saraswati Puja, marks the arrival of spring (Vasant) and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, arts, and learning. According to Hindu mythology, on this day, Lord Brahma created Goddess Saraswati to bring knowledge and wisdom to the world. The festival falls on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright fortnight of the month of Magha. Yellow is the predominant color of the festival, symbolizing the mustard fields that bloom during spring and the vibrancy of life. It is considered an auspicious day to begin education, and many children are initiated into learning on this day through a ceremony called Vidyarambham. Students worship their books, musical instruments, and writing materials, seeking Saraswati's blessings for success in their studies and creative pursuits.
Goddess Saraswati is worshipped with white and yellow flowers, fruits, and sweets. Books, musical instruments, and writing materials are placed before the deity for blessings.
Devotees wear yellow clothes and eat yellow-colored foods like saffron rice and yellow sweets. Yellow represents the blooming mustard fields and the energy of spring.
Young children are initiated into learning on this auspicious day. They are taught to write their first letters, usually "Om" or the first letter of their name, on rice grains.
Schools and colleges organize cultural programs, music performances, and art exhibitions. Students participate in competitions and showcase their talents.
